Now that Wordpress is installed on your machine, let’s look at various features that Wordpress offers in a blog. While your local website is at http://localhost/localblog , you will be administering and managing the site through your administrator account which was setup during installation. Visit http://localhost/ localblog/wp-admin/ and enter your username as ‘admin’ and the password which was displayed to you during installation. After logging in successfully, you will be displayed the Wordpress Dashboard Screen.

The Wordpress Dashboard is status summary screen of all the activities and statistics related your blog. It shows at a glance the number of posts or articles published, the pages published, the number of categories & tags in the blog. It also shows comment related statistics i.e., how many total comments, of that how many were approved, how many are still pending for moderation and how many comments are marked as spam.

The Dashboard also presents with QuickPress Editor, which is a tiny editor for quickly writing, saving and publishing posts directly from dashboard. The Dashboard also shows any posts or pages pending as Drafts and recent comments and incoming links to the blog. In short, Wordpress Dashboard is very useful for quickly knowing what is going on in the blog at a higher overview level.

The Top bar above the Wordpress Dashboard and the left menu bar are static throughout the administrators’ section. The Top bar has a link to visit the blog by clicking on the Blog Title or the ‘visit site’ link.

In the right hand side of the top bar, you have a dropdown for quick shortcuts to frequently used admin tasks such as write a new post or page, edit a draft, upload any image, video or other media and a link to comments moderation page. To the right of this dropdown, you will find admin link, which will take you to edit the administrators’ profile. Besides that there is a Turbo link, which shows information that Wordpress, is now integrated with Google Gears, so if Gears is enabled then Wordpress will use the locally stored version of images, text, videos, etc. instead of remote access. This speeds up development and saves time. Then at the end at top right, there is a logout link for exiting the administrator’s section.
