SERPs and Rankings :
Search Engines do not show the links to webpages in the search results page (SERP) in any random order. Every search engine has its own special methods, algorithms and techniques for displaying most useful and highly relevant links related to the keywords at the top in search results and in the first few pages.
It has been observed that generally majority of the people using search engines click on first few results of the SERPs. Also, from the remaining, majority of the people visit the first 3 or 4 pages of the SERPs for any search. Very few people actually go beyond the first 10 SERPs. So, as a results, the websites whose webpages' links rank on the first SERP for keywords related to it's content, receive maximum visitors from the search engine. Other websites, whose webpages' links rank after first SERP but before the first 5 SERPs, may receive some visitors, but the websites whose webpages rank beyond the first 10 SERPs may receive very less visitors.

For example, if a user is searching for ‘web design tutorials’ in Google.
Then, he will see the web designing tutorials available in the first SERP. He may click on the first few results shown by the search engine. But, if he is not satisfied with the result on the first page, he may click on the next button to see more results for the same keywords or else he may change the keywords to something else. User behavior studies indicate that mostly he will click on a link on the first SERP or try some new keywords for search rather than check for the next SERPs.
So, if you want to receive lots of visitors to your website, then it should be visible in the first few SERPs. For better visibility and rankings in the SERPs, you have to make certain changes in your websites and take some steps to promote your site. These changes may be to make your website more easily accessible to the search engines, adding more keywords to the headings and content of your website, making the heading of the articles or blog posts more attractive, catchy or meaningful to the users, writing quality content, promoting your site on social bookmarking sites like Digg.com, reddit.com, delicious.com, etc. All the steps, techniques, methods and tools that you use in order to make your site rank higher in search engines are called as SEO.
