While browsing the web, you might have come across certain strange sounding terms like 'SEO', 'Search Engine Optimization',
SEO books, SEO tools, SEO techniques, Google Optimization, Google Pagerank, SERPs, Website Keywords, Inbound links, Link Juice etc.
If you are new to internet marketing or a beginner, then all the above words may sound Greek to you. You may be wondering what
is this all fuss about SEO? Why is SEO so much important? What exactly is a Google Pagerank? Don't worry. This article will explain to you what exactly is SEO and why is it very important for your website.

Basically, to know and understand SEO, you first need to understand why Website Owners create websites and why people visit their websites. Also, you need to know how people use these search engines to find out what they want. You also need to understand the way search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. work.

Search Engine Optimization
Need for Search :

Website Creators or Publishers first create their websites for satisfying certain needs of people. After creating a website, they need to have some visitors on their site else it would be useless. There may be many different reasons for people to visit the website. The website visitors may be motivated to come to the site for reading the website content like news websites, blogs, etc.; finding a product, service or idea as a solution to their problem; for social networking with friends; for downloading music, software or games; for playing online games, etc.

So, on one hand you have the demand side, which are the people who have certain needs which can be fulfilled online by visiting some website and on the other hand, you have the supply side, which are the website publishers, who create and publish websites with aim of satisfying those user needs. Now, the question how to match the demand and the supply? How to bring visitors to the website?

Search Engines - Yahoo, Bing, Google

This is exactly where search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. come into picture. Search Engines try to bridge in the gap between the demand and the supply for websites. Whenever a person has to find something on the web, but does not know which website can fulfill his need or is not satisfied with the websites currently known to him, he goes to a Search Engine's Website like www.google.com. Although in this example we will be talking about Google search engine, the process is similar for other search engines. Then, he types inside a search box few words related to what he wants to find and then clicks on 'Google Search' button. Google then shows a Search Results page with links to webpages related to the words he typed and some part of the content of that website, which may be related to those words. The words used to search by user are called keywords and the results pages shown by the search engine are called SERPs, which stands for Search Engine Results Pages.
