What brings the new Adobe Photoshop CS5

The "White Rabbit", which is CS5's codename, comes with two versions, Basic and Extended. In the Basic one the complex selections are made easier, brings the Puppet Warp and we can also find HDR Pro and HDR Toning. The Extended version comes with quick shadow creation and image-based lights, rich 3D materials, motion-based content editing and image measurements and analysis. That sounds promising, isn't it?

In this new Photoshop version the complex selection are made easier. Removing background is a lot easier while selecting the hair is really a game using the refine radius and erase refinement tools. Probably the most exciting feature is the content-aware fill. Using this tool, image elements can easily be removed by painting them with background details. It will become one of the most used tool in the new version because it's stunning, using it really gives a sign of magic. You can see here a sample of what can the content aware fill do.

The RAW Image Processing is also better in the new version of Photoshop. You can remove noise achieve better quality sharpening, automatically correct common lens errors and even apply new styles of vignettes and film-like grain. The Geometric Distortion is a common lens-based error. Well, the Automatic Lens Correction will help you to make your picture look more realistic than the one you got from the camera with an error.

There are also lots of other improvements, but I will write down just a few of them, which I consider the most important:

  • Default value for Shadows/Highlight is modified from 50% to 35%
  • You can now move a section with the layer hidden
  • You can now use scripts to delete all the empty layers.
  • You have a "Close All" button without Saving option
  • Zoom in and out with the new scrubby tool.
  • New creative resources, including actions, tools, presets, brushes, swatches, shapes, gradients, styles and tool presets
  • An option to change the opacity of multiple selected layers
  • Layer groups can be nested more than five levels deep

With all of this being said, I can't wait to try the new Photoshop CS5. Unfortunately, the price is too high, as in the last versions. For the Basic version you will need $700 ($200 to upgrade), while for the Extended one you will have to spend $1000 (#349) to upgrade. Anyway, for the ones that use Photoshop for their business, I don't think is that much, especaially taking into considerations the new features Adobe released.
