If you want to create Categories, then you can click the Categories Sub-menu under the Posts Menu. Then under 'Add Category', type the 'Category Name' in the textbox. You can leave 'Category Slug' as blank for now. Basically, a 'Slug' is a URL friendly name of the category which contains only letters, numbers and hyphens. So, if in your Category Name there are spaces they automatically converted to hyphens by wordpress. Only in special case, where you are not satisfied with the default Category Slug name provided by Wordpress, then you can type in your Slug name. Under 'Category Parent', you may select the parent Category from the dropdown, if your new Category is going to be a sub-category under it. Lastly, you can optionally fill in the 'Description' in the Description box. Click on 'Add Category' button to create your category.
