All human beings are allergic to pain. Nobody likes pain. That’s why we have ‘painkiller’. Painkiller, known as analgesic, is any drugs used to relieve pain, such as paracetamol, salicylates, morphine, opium, etc.. But all of today’s available painkiller drugs are chemical substance which for long term usage may cause some side effects. Here are some diseases that need long term usage of pain killer : cancer, acute kidney failure, joint pain, sickle cell disease, etc.. Imagine these serious diseases added with the side effects, what a miserable life!
But fortunately we have this Chili. Never underestimate Chili, ok? You know its power, the one that makes you sweat a lot and open your mouth widely for water. Don’t you like Chili? I love it most! People in Indonesia have it in all kinds of food. Chili is a must in our meals. And I’m so glad to know that it will become the best natural painkiller.
How can Chili become painkiller? Chili contains ‘capsaicin’, a substance that gives us the hot taste when we consume it. Capsaicin is also found in human body, especially in the painful area. If the production of capsaicin can be reduced or blocked, then the pain will automatically gone. This is one of the possibilities to terminate pain.
Dr. Kenneth Hargreaves, a senior researcher from Texas University, America, said that when human body was injured, the OLAMs (Oxidized Linoleic Acid Metablites) which is similar to capsaicin would be produced and sent to the brain’s receptors as pain signal. Dr. Kenneth’s aim was to reduce the sensitivity of the brain receptors in receiving this pain signal so that the pain wasn’t painful at all or at least reduced. His laboratory test to the rats has proved the reliability of this theory.
Through his research of body mechanism in responding the pain signal and the capsaicin found in Chili, dr. Hargreaves is positive that they will come out with new Chili painkiller.
