According to a research from Google and the Usenix Workshop on Large-Scale Exploits and Emergent Threats in California, a Fake Antivirus is infecting thousands of computers.
The analysis, which consists of more than 240 millions web pages, found that a Fake Antivirus software is scamming PC users all over the world. The main thing causing this infection is because the malicious software shows on screen like a real antivirus scanning your computer and telling you that your system has been infected.
Moreover, many users are getting into this scam and when they click on the program what they are actually doing is letting this software attack their system. The main target of the software is to steal data and force people to buy the antivirus, which in fact is just stealing.
The analysis mention:
"Surprisingly, many users fall victim to these attacks and pay to register the fake [anti-virus software],"
"To add insult to injury, Fake anti-viruses often are bundled with other malware, which remains on a victim's computer regardless of whether a payment is made."
The study also shows that more than 11,000 domains were involved in this attack and half of the infections where coming from Adverts. The only thing that you should be aware is that if you already have an antivirus running on your systems and you normally keep it up to the latest definitions, there is no need to install another antivirus. Be aware and careful where you click on from now on.
