General Steps to Update Any Computer BIOS (Basic Input/Output System)

The BIOS is a firmware designed to be the first program run by a computer when you turn it on. The main function of the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is to identify, test, and initialize all the hardware devices such as the video card, hard disk, floppy disk, network card, and any other system’s hardware.

As you should know, programs on your computer should be updated normally to fix bugs, general problems, security patches, and many other issues that will help you computer become a more stable system. These updates are available at the manufacturer's Website. However, updating your BIOS could be a little more risky because if you make a mistake in the update process, you can finish with an unbootable PC.  So here's how you can be sure, you update your BIOS without any hazard.

You will need to identify your current BIOS version.

One way to check this is to open the System Information in Windows. Just type msinfo32 into the search bar (for Windows 7/Vista) or the Run box (for XP), and click System Summary.

Your BIOS version should now show up on the right under your processor speed. Record your version number and the date.

Check your computer/motherboard manufacturer's Website for BIOS updates.

These days it is easier to find BIOS updates. Just visit your computer manufacturer’s Website and find the Support/Drivers section. Then, just enter the model number and version/revision (if applicable) of your PC or Motherboard.
Although there should warnings if you try to install a different update BIOS version, make always sure that you have the right update. Otherwise, you will be finishing in a situation that it won’t be pretty.

If you have a Branded PC and is still under warranty, try to contact customer service for instructions, and ask them about the BIOS update procedure or if you will need to update your BIOS version to solve known problems with the PC.

Normally all information will come in a white sticker behind or at the bottom of the computer. PC manufactures tend to laser print the general model of the PC at the front. However the exact model number should be found on the sticker. So don't get confused on this.

BIOS updates will come in packages that more often that no, they will come with a READ ME file. They will include all the updates applied to the new version, the changes of the new update, and troubleshoot section. Please make sure you carefully read all these documents. They will have an answer most of the time.
