Today I came across with a problem in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (11.8169.8172) SP3. I setup a POP 3 account in the program and everything was working right.
It was sending and receiving e-mails, but for some reason when I was trying to send an e-mail to a hotmail, live, gmail, or any other free e-mail account, Outlook was sending me this error “Error 503: Valid RCPT command must precede DATA” or error “550 This Server.”
So what I did to solve this problem was the following,
First I was testing to send to a hotmail account.
A) I was using a general Subject.
B) I was using dummy text content.
C) Finally, I just hit sent.

The error appears as an e-mail back in my inbox that was telling me that the e-mail was not reachable.
1A = 550 This Server
2A = Error 503: Valid RCPT command must precede DATA

So to solve this problem do the following.
1.1. Go to “Tools”
1.2. Then click on “E-mail Accounts..”
1.3. Choose “View or change existing e-mail accounts”
1.4. Click “Next”
1.5. Choose the default account.
1.6. Click “Change”
1.7. Click “More Settings..”
1.8. Click on the tab “Outgoing Server”
1.9. Check “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.”
1.10. Check “Use mail setting as my incoming mail server”
1.11. Click “OK”
That’s it by now there should be everything good and working.
