Disabling the paging file on Windows XP

If you are using more than 1 GB of memory on your computer, you could probably disable the paging file on Windows XP without causing any trouble on the system. The paging file basically help programs get more memory when you run out of physical memory ram or in other words exceed the physical memory installed on a PC.

For instance, if you are using a program that is consuming 512 MB of physical memory, and you only have 512 MB of memory ram, the paging file will create virtual memory so your program does not crash.

What are the benefits of disabling the paging file?

Reading and writing directly from physical memory is much faster than reading and writing from the paging file. So if you disable the paging file, it will increase significantly the reading and writing process of programs.

What is the worst thing of disabling the paging file?

Well as I just commented on my example above, the lack of paging if you run out of physical memory while running the software, it will make the program crash. As a consequence all data from that program will be lost.

So again, if you have more than 1GB you can disable the paging file. But if you are planning to run Photo Editors and Video Editors, I will recommend you live the paging file on.

So here the instructions to disable the page file on Windows XP.

1. Go to “System Properties.”

2. You can access the “System Properties” by going to “Start”, then right click on “My Computer” and click “Properties.”

3. Click on the “Advanced” tab and then “Performance.”

4. After that you need to find again the “Advanced” tab and click there.

5. You will find at the bottom a section call “Virtual Memory.”
