CMOS Battery. In this tutorial you will learn how to replace the battery, and why you need to change it every 3 to 5 years. Please don't forget to adjust the date and time after replacing the old battery.
CMOS = Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor chip.
The main function of the CMOS battery is to supply energy to the CMOS chip. The CMOS chip stores information about your computer like date, time, and hardware information among many other things.
One of the common problems if you don't change your battery is that your date and time keep changing every time you restart your Windows XP or Vista computer.
Your time is changing because one of the problem could be that the battery does not power your CMOS chip anymore because is death or malfunctioning. As a consequence the CMOS chip does not receive energy to keep the date and time current. As a consequence the time on your Windows will keep changing to an old date or something wrong.

STEPS TO FOLLOW.
PC = Personal Computer
1. Find a good bench where you can rest your PC
2. Get a good and small flat head driver. It should be a non-magnetic driver. Remember magnetic tools can damage your internal PC parts, especially the chips.
3. Disconnected the PC from all power source.
4. Ground yourself. You can use a antistatic wristband or if you don't have one, please touch the PC Chassis before start touching any parts inside. This is not 100% secure environment but it will help. Also please check that your room temperature is not to cold or to hot, just right.
5. Open you PC.
6. Locate the battery and change it.
7. Close the PC and reconnect everything.
If you did not move anything else, you should be ready.
